Spybot Search & Destroy is one of the longest standing anti-virus programs on the market. It can detect a lot of unwanted malware that other programs fail to find and has a built in immunisation option that helps to protect your computer from additional threats.
Updating
Before running a scan, always update Spybot to ensure that any new threats are detected. In order to do this, you first need to go to the update option on the left hand side of the screen. A box will appear asking which mirror you would like to download from, choose the one nearest to your location (it doesn’t matter too much) and click continue. Select which updates you would like to download and install and click download at the bottom of the screen. It is important to make sure you download all of the detection rules.
Scanning
To run a scan using Spybot Search and Destroy, click on the search and destroy icon on the upper left hand side, and click check for problems. If the program asks if you want to remove temp files click yes. The scan will begin and take some time to finish depending on the amount of files on your computer. When the scan is complete, click the fix selected option at the top of the screen. Click ok and youre done.
Immunising
This feature of Spybot Search and Destroy allows you to protect yourself from many threats before they even get into your computer. To immunise your pc using Spybot, close all web browser windows and go to the immunise icon on the left side of the screen. Click on the immunise option at the top of the screen and wait for immunisation to finish, this can take a few minutes.
